How do you throw an egg on the floor without cracking it?

Who would have thought that a little cornflour and water would protect a raw egg from concrete?

How do you blow up a balloon without using your breath?

Today, in Year 4, we have been investigating how to inflate a balloon without using our breath. We had lots of ideas including using a balloon pump, filling it with water and putting popping candy inside the balloon with a fizzy drink.

To find out how we managed to inflate the balloons, come along to the science exhibition on Thursday in the hall after school…

Here are some pictures to get you thinking…

All things exciting and amazing in Year 4…

It’s been a busy half term in Year 4 and we hope you enjoy reading about it.

In our literacy lessons, we have really enjoyed reading Oliver and the Seawigs by Philip Reeve.  The story is about Oliver’s journey to find his lost parents and on his way, he meets a mermaid called Iris, an albatross called Mr Culpepper and a talking island called Cliff.  Once we finished reading Oliver and the Seawigs, we moved on to our next book, Jemmy Button by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidali.  We will keep you updated about this exciting new adventure.

We have been having interesting music lessons with Mr S (from Havering Music School) and right now we are learning how to play the mini steel pan.

In our history lessons, we have been learning about The Shang Dynasty of China, which we have linked to our PE lessons.  We have taken on the role of warriors, craftsmen and farmers and created movements to music.  In art, we have been sketching and painting our own Ming vase designs. You can see them hanging up in our classrooms.

In computing, we have started to think about making a new educational game in Scratch with a partner.  We have been using coding blocks to create and move our characters.

In science, we made circuits using batteries, wires with crocodile clips, bulbs, a motor and a buzzer.  We learnt how to use two different types of switches within our circuits.  We also learnt about the components of a plug.  It was an amazing topic to learn about!

Come back and find out more about the brilliant activities after half term.

Pete’s Dragon

On Monday 14th November, Year 4 went to see the incredible Pete’s Dragon.  It is about an orphaned boy called Pete who has become best friends with a dragon called Elliot. The adventure begins when Pete is found alone in the woods and is taken away from his home and his best friend.  Although the community are trying to help him, the story follows his struggle to be reunited with his friendly, caring dragon and how he means no harm to the community.  The villagers try to capture the dragon to make money from their discovery and the film unfolds a heart-warming ending of bravery and perseverance and never-ending friendship.

Our latest book…

Our children have really enjoyed our latest book ‘The Village that Vanished’ by Ann Grifalconi. It retold the story of the Yao community escaping from the Slavers in East Africa.

The book is beautifully illustrated by Kadir Nelson and we created our own version of some of the images from the book.

Check back to see our artwork…
